5 Reasons I Quit my $66,507.67 Job During a Recession

He was a young man out of college. The journey had only begun. Everyone said he had a great future in front of him. Revenue in the company jumped thousands of percent in a short period of time. They were going to expand and increase revenue even more in the next few years.

I had what most people wish they had during this recession and when times are great. A great paying job out of college, all health benefits covered, a company phone, free food, free dry cleaning, and many more benefits.

There was also potential in the future with the company such as inheriting the multi-million dollar business.

I had a small little problem when I went on a 5 day vacation without letting my supervisors know. I had such a great time away and I’m moving there later this month.

Reasons for Quitting

Yes, I did resign from my job with a two weeks notice on December 14th 2009.

Yes, many 2009 college graduates, and my fellow graduating peers in 2008 are having trouble finding any job right now as we speak. (Just found out one of my former college mates will be taking his own leap soon, congrats man, I hope to interview him in a future post, wink, wink).

Yes, I am very damn proud of myself through all this.

Here are my 5 reasons:

  • Limited Freedom
  • Lack of Energy to focus on my business
  • No Challenge
  • Manipulation
  • Busy Work

1. What I lacked is the reason I could no longer work in the job. I did not have freedom of location. I was restricted to where my job wanted me.

2. At the end of the day, I didn’t have the drive to do better, or to focus on my own business. I would be tired and drained and worried about the work that piled up. I would make excuses to not be productive, instead I would watch anime or play computer games.

3. The biggest component missing in the job, a challenge. I thought money would allow me to work for any position, doing whatever mundane work. I realize this amount of money means nothing to me, because it is thinking too small.

4. I also didn’t enjoy being told by the boss “I’m the boss, you need to listen to what I say and do what I say. If you don’t want to work, I’ll find someone else to do it.” I was told this hours before I resigned.

5. The more effective I became, the more expected of me. I changed the work load from 50-60 hours a week to 4-8 hours a week using a lot of ideas out of 4-Hour Work Week. They demanded the work become 40 hours or more in a week. Essentially, the more effective I became, the more work demanded of me, even if it was useless busy work, effectiveness did not matter.

I’ll write more on how to be more effective and what I used to escape the office for multiple vacations.

Does any of this sound similar to your situation and are you fed up with your position or job as I was?

I’m not telling you to quit your day job. I did not realize until recently that I have been preparing to jump ship for almost a year now.

I’ve had a lot of time to prepare and I have always saved 50% or more of my income. I studied, read a lot of books, and experimented in my job and with a lot of internet projects. I incorporated my business into a LLC in March 2009. There have been many failures since, though I’ve learned a lot.

I remember being young and I always wanted to be older faster. Time was so slow as a kid, no responsibility and unlimited time to do whatever I wanted. I see now as I am older time is fast with this responsibility I hold and I know many others who wish they were still kids.

Life is short.

Life is too short to be stuck in an office. I will live around the world, meet a lot of new people, experience so many cultures and so much more.

If you think quitting your job today is a bad idea because of the economy, you are certainly right. You may not have much saved or a plan.

You would be amazed though to hear the hundreds, or thousands of stories about those successful entrepreneurs such as Pat Flynn who was fired from his job and since then created a 6 figure a year online business. Tim Ferris who went from 80 hours a week for $40,000.00 a year to 4 hours a week and $40,000.00 a month (he makes a lot more as of today).

What is Vagabond Insider?

The reason I created Vagabond Insider is to show my experiments with life. I’m going to test a lot of things. I’ll write about most everything I test, using pictures and videos too.

I spend a lot of my time studying many different concepts and ideas. I believe no one can really understand another person without understanding the books the person has read or people he has met. Some things which make sense to me may not make sense to another unless you read the same books as me.

My first test has been selling most of my possessions and reducing my expenses to very low.

Another experiment I have is resigning from my job and moving across the country, from California to Texas and increasing net profit of my businesses to $10,000.00 a month by May 2010.

Being a vagabond is more than just a lifestyle change. There is a lot of personal development involved. Lifestyle changes also include financial changes, and belief changes involved.

There are a lot of people I owe credit to for taking so much action and change in such a short time. Thank you Eben Pagan, Tim, Yanik, Glen, Pat, NickKarol, Napoleon Hill (Think and Grow Rich), and Mom.

This post was originally over 2,500 words, though I broke it down to many posts because it covered too many topics.

In the next post tomorrow, we’ll cover why burning bridges increases results dramatically.

Tell me this. What do you want to learn about?

When I was a freshman in college,I was asked by a friend: What kind of work do you want in the future? Then I answered: No matter what,I just want to move from one city to another using what I have learnt to make my ends meet. He replied:it is great, but it is not practical at all. In my culture I always feel like people believing in the eldly, even the commericial, people following others’experience to get their position in the society, people keeping up telling me how to behave or even blaming me for my behaving weird.
Yeah,we can’t put a right or wrong title upon them, because that’s the tradition for thousands of years. Now I get to know more ,get to learn more, get the courage to work for my side.

I like the answer, its a great vision. You’re right, when I started telling people my decision, they thought it was not practical at all. They are right, though they are wrong when they think it is a bad idea. In my interview with Karol, he tells us to thank these people for the unwarranted advice and move on. Which it looks like you are doing.

Nice post.

Sidenote: Don’t screw your credibility towards advertisers by encouraging your readers just to ‘click’ on ads.
